Paraguay, officially the Republic of Paraguay, is one of the two landlocked countries which lie entirely within the Western Hemisphere, the other being Bolivia, both in South America. It lies on both banks of the Paraguay River and is bordered by Argentina to the south and southwest, Brazil to the east and northeast, and Bolivia to the northwest. Because of its central location in South America, the country is sometimes referred to as Corazón de Amé...rica — Heart of America. As of 2009 the population was estimated at over six million.
Paraguay is ranked as the world's least expensive city to live in for the fifth year running.
Asunción is the capital and largest city of Paraguay. The "Ciudad de Asunción" is an autonomous capital district not part of any department. The metropolitan area, called Gran Asunción, includes the cities of San Lorenzo, Fernando de la Mora, Lambaré, Luque, Mariano Roque Alonso, Ñemby, San Antonio, Limpio, Capiatá and Villa Elisa, which are part of the Central Department. The Asunción metropolitan area has more than 1.9 million inhabitants. The Municipality of Asuncion is listed on the Asuncion Stock Exchange, as BVPASA: MUA, a unique feature of any city. It is the home of the national government, principal port, and the chief industrial and cultural centre of the country. Local manufacturing production includes footwear, textiles, and tobacco products.
Ciudad del Este
Ciudad del Este (Spanish for City of the East) is the capital of Alto Paraná department of Paraguay, located at the Rio Paraná. Founded in 1957, it was originally called Puerto Flor de Lis (Port Fleurdelis), then until 1989 Puerto Presidente Stroessner (Port President Stroessner), after Alfredo Stroessner. It is part of a triangle known as the Triple Frontera (Triple border), or Tríplice Fronteira in Portuguese. It is linked to the Brazilian city of Foz do Iguaçu by the Friendship Bridge; Puente de la Amistad in Spanish, Ponte da Amizade in Portuguese. The city is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Ciudad del Este.
San Lorenzo is a city located in the Central Department in Paraguay, some 10 kilometers away from the capital Asunción. It is the third most populated city of Paraguay and its main activity is commerce. The National University of Asunción campus is located in San Lorenzo. The city is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Lorenzo.
Luque is a city in Central Department, Paraguay, part of the Gran Asunción metropolitan area. It is the location of the Silvio Pettirossi International Airport for Asunción and the headquarters of CONMEBOL. It is the birthplace of José Luis Chilavert, Paraguay's greatest ever footballer. It is a centre of production of Guitars and Paraguayan harps as well as Filigranas, gold and silver filigree jewellery including the seven-band ring Carretón de Siete Ramales.
Capiatá is a city in Central Department, Paraguay. It is the only city in Central that has limits with seven cities: Aregua, Itaugua, Juan Augusto Saldívar, Luque, Ñemby, San Lorenzo and Ypane.
